Custom Rules in Walbux

This article contains 3 sections:
1. Creating Rules on the fly with the Quick-Rule button
2. Creating Rules from the Custom Rules page
3. Managing Custom Rules

Custom Rules are key to Walbux - they are how you tell Walbux to modify future transactions automatically.

For example, if my electricity bill payments are labeled by my bank as ORIG CO NAME:EVERSOURCE but I always want to change this to say "Eversource Electric Bill" and categorize it as "Housing > Utilities > Electricity", I can tell Walbux to do this for me with a Custom Rule.

Custom Rules can be created from the Custom Rules page (Settings > Custom Rules) or by using the Quick-Rule button on the Details Card for new transactions.

Creating Rules on the fly with the Quick-Rule button

This button is available for transactions meeting all of the following conditions:

  1. You have not edited the transaction’s name
  2. The transaction has not been modified by an existing Custom Rule

Step 1 - Open the transaction you wish to create a rule for and click the red Quick-Rule button.

Step 2 - Fill in the Custom Rule fields as desired.

Only include critical characters in the "If transaction name contains" field.  In the above photo, there is no _space_ between "NAME:" and "EVERSOURCE", but your bank may add a space next time.  Banks also commonly include dates in transaction labels, which you definitely want to remove here!

We have reduced the matching condition to a simple "EVERSOURCE" in this case ("Eversource" would also work; rules are not case-sensitive).

Note: If you leave the "Rename transaction" field blank, Walbux will not rename the transaction and will just apply any other actions you specify (categorize, add tags, etc.).

Step 3 - Click Save Rule

Step 4 - You are now brought back to the transaction’s Details Card in case you wish to make any edits to this specific transaction.  Once finished, click Save.

Creating Rules from the Custom Rules page

Step 1 - Go to Settings > Custom Rules

Step 2 - Click the + Rule button

Step 2 - Fill in the Custom Rule fields as desired.

Only include critical characters in the "If transaction name contains" field.  In the above photo, there is no _space_ between "NAME:" and "EVERSOURCE", but your bank may add a space next time.  Banks also commonly include dates in transaction labels, which you definitely want to remove here!

Step 3 - Click Save Rule

Managing Custom Rules

If you need to edit/delete an existing rule, or you simply want to look through your active rules, you can do so in Settings > Custom Rules.

Click on a rule’s row to open its Details Card for editing, or click its checkbox and then Delete to remove it.
